Trish Meekins

Trish Meekins is the sole owner of Nikaanaganaa Counselling & Learning Centre located at 897 3rd Ave. E. in Owen Sound. Trish provides individual and family counselling for ALL people and cultures. Cultural Awareness and Sensitivity Training and various other trainings to suit the needs of your organization; for example lateral violence and workplace ethics. She has been a counselor and teacher of First Nations culture and history for over 20 years. Her passion is her Indigenous roots and finds rewarding work in assisting all people become educated about themselves and how they fit as a part of community extending out to all of Creation. Trish offers training for agencies and organizations in cross-cultural training, lateral violence, workplace ethics, to name a few. She also runs a group for people entitled, “Pathways to Inner Peace; Living Life in Balance,” that she developed when she worked as a women’s counselor; realizing the tools she taught are beneficial to all people.
Trish is the mother of four sons and lives in Owen Sound, ON, with her two younger teenage sons. Trish is of Pottawatomi and Mohawk decent and strongly identifies with her Anishnabek culture and history. The granddaughter of Wilmer Nadjiwon and Lucie Nadjiwon and the daughter of Anita Nadjiwon and John Meekins. Trish has her a Master of Social Work in the Aboriginal Field of Study and a Bachelor of Social Work in the same stream with additional education in Child and Youth Counselling and a Certified Consulting Hypnotist. Her passion for education, helping people and living a good life has come from her extended family who have shown her she has much to be proud of.
Trish is a registered social worker and has a longstanding career as both a counselor and a teacher. Trish began her work as a Child and Youth Counselor and for may years worked in the education system both at the secondary and post-secondary levels. In these roles Trish was not only a mentor and counselor to the young people but also taught various topics such as First Nations history and culture but also life skills, ethics and other socially related courses.
Trish has been gifted with many of her Indigenous teachings and uses her knowledge in that capacity to assist people through life’s challenges, while focusing on the four parts of self; spiritual, emotional, mental and physical. As a knowledge keeper for the Saugeen Ojibway Nation and an advocate for environmental issues she has dedicated her time and passion in being a Water Walker in the Sacred Migration Water Walk of 2015 with grandmother Josephine Mandamin.

Trish is also a Therapeutic Touch Practitioner and offers this treatment as an additional component to your counselling experience. Therapeutic Touch can assist with many ailments, from anxiety, minor aches and pains, as well as the ability to speed up the healing process within an individual.
